Diy Juju Hat Wall Decor
Updated: Aug 22, 2019
Juju hats are taking over the design space as beautiful contemporary wall hangings in our homes. Traditionally, Juju hats are African head dresses worn during festivities and ceremonial dances - they symbolize prosperity and are created from wild bird feathers.
Now they’ve hit the design space and I’m going to show you how to make your own!
Prep Time: 30 Minutes
Square Cork Board Mat
2 Frame Hanging Hooks
3 1/2 Yard White Strung Coque Tail Feathers
STEP 1: MARK YOUR CORNERS + CUT
Start by marking and cutting off the corners on your square cork board mat.
By cutting the corners, you ensure no element of the cork board will show through underneath your feathers and it always helps provide a shape for your pattern.
STEP 2: GLUE YOUR WALL HANGINGS
Using a glue gun, attach your wall hangings to the back of your cork board. You’ll want to make sure you properly measure this out to keep both hangings level to each other.
STEP 3: WORK FROM THE OUTSIDE IN
It’s time to attach your feathers! I should preface this step with the fact that there many ways to attach your feathers, you could simply sew them onto another surface…but I’m not a great seamstress and this application works just great for me.
Starting on the outside, working in an inward spiral formation, add a few dollops of hot glue and fassen the strung portion of the feathers to the board . The glue holds great and doesn’t damage the visible feathers.
Simply, keep working inward until finally you reach the centre.
Add a large dollop right down the middle and push the final centre bits down.
There you go! Your DIY Juju Hat wall hanging is complete!
I designed my wall hanging with two rattan charger plates and a vintage photo I found at my nearest thrift store.
